Internal Hardware Damage to Toshiba External Hard Drive Caselog
16Sept2024Â A customer recently arrived at Zero Alpha Data Recovery with a Toshiba External Hard Drive exhibiting a consistent clicking noise. This specific problem was due to hardware issues inside the drive. This is critical because the read/write head, crucial for accessing and interpreting data, had been damaged causing severe operational issues. As a result, the hard drive was unable to read or write data correctly.Â
The drive which houses a Toshiba MQ04UBF100 USB hard drive with G0024A PCB. Our team at Zero Alpha was quick to diagnose the problem, recognizing the need for specialized equipment and expertise to address the delicate repair work required.
The initial procedure for addressing issues with a USB hard drive involves replacing the USB PCB with a compatible SATA PCB. Specifically, the original USB PCB identified as G0034A must be swapped for a G4311A SATA PCB. Zero Alpha engineers perform this operation in a controlled clean room environment, utilizing specialized tools to transfer the ROM chips and verify the functionality of the new PCB. This process should only be conducted by professionals, as improper handling can result in permanent damage to the hard drive and lead to irreversible data loss. Following the PCB swap, the engineers employ advanced recovery software to assess the success of the operation and ensure the drive is operational.
Our specialists, equipped with advanced tools and extensive experience in handling such delicate repairs, began the meticulous process of disassembling the drive in a clean room environment. They noticed the physical damage to the head piece used for reading and writing and noted that the bent head piece was likely causing alignment problems, leading to further complications in data retrieval. We note that we do not recommend performing this procedures without the proper tools and expertise as there is high risk of damaging the drive when disassembling a hard drive.
