Seagate ST2000LM007-1R8174 2.5 SATA Data Recovery
The Seagate ST2000LM007-1R8174 is a 2TB internal hard drive designed for use in laptops and other compact computing devices. It features a 2.5-inch form factor, SATA interface, and rotational speed of 5400 RPM. With its high storage capacity and reliable performance, the ST2000LM007-1R8174 has become a popular choice for storing a vast array of data, ranging from personal files to critical business information.
Common Problems Leading to Data Loss
Despite its reputation for reliability, the Seagate ST2000LM007-1R8174 is susceptible to various issues that can result in data loss. Some of the common problems users may encounter include:
- Physical Damage: Accidental drops, mishandling, or exposure to extreme temperatures can cause physical damage to the hard drive, leading to issues such as head crashes or platter damage.
- Logical Errors: File system corruption, bad sectors, or software issues can result in logical errors that prevent the operating system from accessing data stored on the hard drive.
- Firmware Issues: Outdated firmware or firmware corruption can cause the hard drive to malfunction, resulting in data inaccessibility or loss.
- Electronic Component Failure: Failure of electronic components such as the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) or power surge damage can render the hard drive inoperable and lead to data loss.
- Accidental Deletion or Formatting: Human error, such as accidental deletion of files or formatting of the hard drive, can result in the loss of valuable data stored on the ST2000LM007-1R8174.
Challenges of Data Recovery
Data recovery from a Seagate ST2000LM007-1R8174 hard drive can present several challenges, primarily due to the nature of the problems mentioned above. Some of the key challenges include:
- Physical Damage Assessment: In cases of physical damage, determining the extent of the damage and identifying the best course of action for repair can be challenging. Specialized tools and expertise are required to diagnose and address issues such as head crashes or platter damage.
- Firmware Reconstruction: Recovering data from a hard drive with firmware issues requires reconstructing or repairing the firmware to restore functionality. This process often requires specialized knowledge and tools to bypass security features and access the firmware directly.
- File System Reconstruction: When dealing with logical errors or file system corruption, recovering data involves reconstructing the file system and locating lost or damaged files. This process can be complex and time-consuming, especially if the file system structures are severely damaged.
- Component-Level Repair: In cases of electronic component failure, repairing or replacing faulty components on the hard drive's PCB may be necessary to regain access to the data. This requires expertise in electronics and access to compatible spare parts.

Seagate Rosewood A5 Keeps beeping and restarting power Data Recovery Log
12June2024: Customer dropped the drive and seized the heads. Stiction release. Techmode Patch. HDD Id Edit. It keeps switching itself off on bad sectors or loss of readyness. Drive sounds like it has bad heads but does read ok in some areas before automatically turning off and asking for unlock. Doesn't matter if you apply an automatic script as it keeps restarting as you read sectors. To solve this please edit your smp with only these settings checked: Disable prefetch, Reading cache is disabled & Disable lookahead.
PCB Brownout Hard Drive
18June2024: Suspect PCB is problematic (one of the terminal messages mentions "brownout", MCU should not be resetting unless there are power issues). Modify seek/calibration flags in ROM, disable IDLE activity in SMP. Use donor PCB. Drive has DWF issue (device fault state). Resolve this by loading the disk FW (volume 0 fid 20D) and applying the "Clear device fault state (RAM)" solution. Must be reapplied when drive is repowered. Imaged the remaining customer data at full speed (after re-enabling read lookahead in SMP)

Sudden Restart of Hard Drive
10Sept23: This hard drive was being used in a mac when sudden restart was done. The owner said that they did not bump or drop this drive but unfortunately it was making a beeping sound on power up. Zero Alpha inspected that the inside master head assembly had been damaged. The heads were dislodged causing a very strong resistive stiction. We have years of experience recovering from this type of scenario. We were able to return all data.

Scratching and Clicking sound in Hard Drive
11Dec23: Drive makes clicking/scratching sounds, 0003 and 0007 servo fails in terminal. Needs head swap.
12Dec23: MHA swap. Drive sounds really bad, but eventually gets a full ID. MRB. Imaged some data, but drive no longer reads. Rosewood A5.
13Dec23: Applied DWF solution (clear fault state in RAM). Drive reads again, imaged more data. After repowering, drive IDs with 0 capacity (translator/MCMT issue). The donor heads cannot write to SA, will require another head swap.
18Dec23: MHA swap. Drive sounds much better with these heads. Heads are able to write to the SA. Edit SMP. Write back working translator, MCMT system files to copy 0. Needs DWF solution again, then we're back to getting a full ID. Imaged several hundred gigabytes of data.

Stiction Hard Drive - Head on Platter

0 (MB) Capacity Hard Drive
17April24: Drive comes ready with 0 capacity in ID. Applied tech mode unlock patch by removing ROM chip, reading, patching, writing to a donor chip, and soldering it back on. Boot ROM mode is locked on this drive (PCB is 100835923 REV B. 100835923 REV A isn't locked, but swapping ROM contents doesn't work). Terminal output indicates translator issues (vol 3 fid 28). Fixed translator and wrote back to drive (after verifying that the heads can write in SA!). Drive has full ID and full DA access after repowering. All client data imaged at max read speed.

Slow Unresponsive Hard Drive from a Lacie
05Aug24 - This ST2000LM007-1R8174 was inside a lacie hard drive casing and was unresponsive with the USB C cable.
06Aug24 - When taken out of the case. The seagate could be read but responded slowly in PC3000.
Bent Head on Seagate Hard Drive Case log
09Aug24 - A customer brought in an ST2000LM007 with part number 1R8174-570 enclosed in a seagate One Touch Hard Drive case. The customer had dropped the hard drive in the casing and it was now beeping but would not run or be read in any device. This hard drive was able to read the preamp and the head information from the ROM information using advanced software by specialised engineers at Zero Alpha.
This hard drive constantly beeped and would not give a good terminal output. When opened up, there was an obvious bend in the top head piece causing the hard drive not be able to read. This hard drive will need a hardware replacement of the heads which can be done by specialised engineers from Zero Alpha Data Recovery. A drive should only be opened by professionals in a safe environment to avoid irreversible damage.
ST2000LM007-1R8174 Quoted $1800 to Recover caselog
25Sep24: This seagate hard drive came from a computer repair shop who quoted it $1800. It had been opened by an unqualified user and left the sticker exposed. Head 0,2 are reading ok but 1,3 are reading very poorly 5kb/s. After reading for a while the drive seemed to hit bad sectors or had issues causing it to: MCMT table is corrupted. We were able to stabalise the drive again by clearing the media cache with level /C and U10 command. The media cache module was damaged at the top using the error recovery mode we were able to get a good looking file but decided to try clearing it first.
